The Challenge

The primary challenge was the additional load that would be introduced when another carrier was added to the existing tower. The current structure had been built to support its established configuration, and adding Verizon equipment meant reinforcement was necessary before the expansion could move forward. Unlike new construction on an undeveloped site, modifying an existing tower foundation requires crews to work with infrastructure that is already in place. As shown in the project photos, K&H excavated around the substantial existing concrete foundation to expose the areas where modification work was required. Crews then had to prepare that existing concrete for integration with the new reinforcement. Careful execution was particularly important because the goal was not to replace the existing foundation, but to strengthen it according to the project plan while maintaining the tower infrastructure it already supported.

K&H's Role

K&H Construction performed the foundation modifications necessary to prepare the Federated Media tower for the additional carrier. After excavating around the existing foundation, crews worked directly with the concrete structure to create the connection points required for reinforcement. The photos provide a close look at this process. K&H crews can be seen removing and preparing portions of the existing concrete surface and drilling into the foundation. Reinforcing steel was then installed at multiple points along the exposed foundation, creating the framework needed for the planned structural modification. Working around an existing tower also required a controlled approach to excavation and construction. K&H's role was to translate the reinforcement plan into field work while accounting for the existing foundation, tower structure, and site conditions. The project demonstrates the company's ability to take on specialized scopes where excavation, concrete work, and telecommunications infrastructure all intersect.
