The Challenge: Construction During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Complex jobsites were only one part of the challenge. The project continued through the COVID-19 pandemic, creating circumstances that affected nearly every aspect of field operations. Work briefly paused while it was determined whether the project should continue under pandemic conditions. Because emergency communications become even more important during a national crisis, the work was ultimately determined to be necessary. Continuing safely required additional preparation. K&H worked with its attorney to develop a comprehensive COVID-19 plan and obtain essential supplies such as masks and hand sanitizer at a time when those products could be difficult to source. Travel also required new planning. Crews had to account for closed restaurants, limited hotel meal services, and constantly changing conditions while remaining prepared to perform demanding telecommunications infrastructure work away from home.

At numerous AEP sites, K&H developed and executed plans for temporary shelters, prefabricated shelter setting, rigging, and jobsite safety. Each location required the team to consider potential obstacles and determine how the shelter could be moved and placed while protecting personnel and surrounding infrastructure. Rigging and shelter setting demand precision, particularly when working near utilities, towers, or other active infrastructure. K&H’s role required close communication among field crews, project partners, and the customer so that challenges could be addressed without jeopardizing the larger project. That same planning extended beyond the physical jobsite. During the pandemic, successful execution meant preparing for transportation, lodging, meals, safety supplies, and changing restrictions alongside the normal demands of construction.
