Tower Site Fence & Protective Bollard Project in Antwerp, OH
The Project
K&H Construction was called to an AEP tower site located on agricultural property in Antwerp, Ohio, to repair existing chain-link fencing and develop a practical way to better protect the communications infrastructure. The tower site sits within an active farming environment, where large agricultural equipment regularly operates near the fenced enclosure and tower support system. The project involved rebuilding damaged portions of the chain-link fence and adding a new layer of protection around the enclosure. As the project photos demonstrate, this wasn't simply a matter of replacing damaged fencing. K&H also installed a series of brightly colored protective bollards and highly visible horizontal barriers around the perimeter. Together, these improvements created a much more noticeable boundary between the working agricultural property and the tower infrastructure.

The Challenge
The location of the tower created an unusual but recurring problem. Because AEP's infrastructure was situated on a farmer's property, heavy agricultural equipment was routinely being operated nearby. Over time, equipment had repeatedly come into contact with the chain-link fence surrounding the tower site. The resulting damage is clearly visible in the project photos, with sections of the original fencing bent significantly out of alignment. AEP's concern extended beyond the fence itself. Continued impacts created the potential for damage to the tower's guy wires. Those wires are an important part of the tower's support system, so preventing equipment from reaching them was a priority. Replacing the fence alone would address the existing damage but wouldn't necessarily prevent the same problem from happening again. The site needed a solution that made the protected area more conspicuous to equipment operators while providing an additional physical boundary around the infrastructure.
K&H's Role
AEP turned to K&H Construction to both repair the damaged enclosure and implement the additional protective measures. K&H rebuilt the chain-link fencing to restore a secure perimeter around the tower equipment. The team then installed brightly colored bollards outside the enclosure to help prevent future equipment contact. Visibility was an important part of the solution. As seen in the completed project photos, the yellow bollards stand out sharply against the surrounding field and vegetation. Highly visible orange/red horizontal barriers extend between the posts, further defining the perimeter around the fenced tower site. This approach addressed the problem on two levels. The repaired chain-link fence restored the tower's immediate enclosure, while the outer protective system provided an additional buffer between agricultural activity and the tower infrastructure. Rather than repeatedly repairing damage as it occurred, K&H helped AEP address the conditions contributing to the problem.
The Result
K&H Construction successfully completed the fence repairs and installation of the new protective bollards and barriers around the Antwerp tower site. The finished system provides a clearly visible perimeter that is easier for operators of tractors and other heavy agricultural equipment to recognize while working nearby. Most importantly, the improvements have provided greater protection for both the chain-link enclosure and the tower infrastructure behind it. Since the work was completed, AEP's fence and tower site have been much better protected from the recurring equipment impacts that prompted the project. The Antwerp project demonstrates how K&H Construction approaches infrastructure challenges with solutions tailored to the conditions of each site. In this case, repairing what had already been damaged was only part of the job. By identifying a practical way to help prevent the problem from recurring, K&H delivered a more durable solution for protecting AEP's tower infrastructure.
