Urgent Tower Removal at Arcola Elementary School
The Project
In the aftermath of the powerful derecho that swept through Fort Wayne on June 13, 2022, K&H Construction was called upon to help address a potentially dangerous situation at Arcola Elementary School. While relatively small in scope, this single-day emergency project required careful planning, specialized expertise, and an unwavering commitment to safety. The result was the successful removal of a compromised communication tower before it could pose a greater threat to students, staff, neighboring properties, and the surrounding community.
The Challenge
The severe storm left a path of destruction throughout northeast Indiana. At the Fort Wayne International Airport, officials recorded a wind gust of 98 miles per hour—the strongest wind gust ever documented at the facility. Across the region, homes, businesses, and infrastructure sustained damage. Among those impacted was an inactive communication tower located at Arcola Elementary. Although the structure remained standing immediately following the storm, the top section had sustained significant damage and was at risk of breaking free. Had the damaged portion collapsed unexpectedly, it could have resulted in serious personal injury and extensive property damage.
K&H's Role:
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Schenkel Construction, Inc. enlisted K&H Construction, Inc. as a subcontractor to assist with the emergency response. The project required both speed and precision. Working under challenging circumstances, the K&H team developed a plan to safely dismantle the compromised structure while minimizing disruption to the surrounding area. Every step of the process was executed with a focus on protecting the public and ensuring the worksite remained secure throughout the operation.
K&H partnered closely with the general contractor and one of its sister companies to complete the project efficiently and without incident. The team first removed the damaged upper section of the tower, eliminating the immediate hazard posed by the unstable structure. Once the most critical portion had been safely taken down, crews proceeded with dismantling the remaining sections of the tower in a controlled and methodical manner. Despite the complexity and risk associated with emergency demolition work, the entire operation was completed within a single day.
The Result
The Arcola Elementary Tower Take Down serves as an example of K&H Construction's ability to respond quickly when unexpected challenges arise. Whether supporting planned infrastructure projects or addressing emergency situations created by severe weather events, K&H brings the experience, equipment, and collaborative approach necessary to deliver safe, dependable results. Through strong partnerships and a commitment to doing the job right, K&H helped eliminate a significant hazard and restore peace of mind to the Arcola community during a difficult time.
Bringing Fire Protection to a Historic Fort Wayne Venue
The Project
When a historic reception hall in Fort Wayne was purchased with plans to transform it into an auction venue, the new owners saw tremendous potential in the property. While the building's existing structure offered a strong foundation for its new purpose, renovations were necessary to ensure the facility complied with modern safety requirements and local building codes. One of the most important upgrades involved installing a fire suppression system capable of supporting the building's new occupancy needs.
The addition of a sprinkler system represented a critical investment in the future of the business and the safety of everyone who would eventually walk through its doors. However, before the new auction hall could open to the public, a dependable water supply connection had to be established. What initially appeared to be a straightforward utility installation quickly became a more complex project due to the location of the city's existing water infrastructure.
The Challenge
The city water line needed to supply the newly installed sprinkler system was located across the street from the building. Under normal circumstances, accessing the utility might have involved cutting into the roadway to excavate and install the necessary piping. However, doing so would have disrupted traffic, increased restoration costs, and created additional inconvenience for nearby businesses and residents. Because the roadway served as an important access route, minimizing disruption became a priority. The project required a solution that would provide the required water connection while preserving the integrity of the existing pavement and maintaining normal traffic flow. Achieving that balance demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, and a construction partner experienced in trenchless installation methods.
K&H's Role
K&H Construction was brought in to develop and execute a practical solution to the challenge. Leveraging its expertise in horizontal directional drilling, the team devised a plan to access the city's water line and install the necessary piping beneath the roadway without disturbing the surface above. Before any drilling activities began, K&H conducted utility locates to identify existing underground infrastructure and reduce the risk of conflicts during installation. The team also coordinated and secured the appropriate traffic control measures to ensure the safety of workers and the public throughout the project. Once preparations were complete, K&H utilized horizontal directional drilling techniques to precisely install the pipe beneath the roadway, creating a direct connection between the city water source and the auction hall's new sprinkler system.
The Result
Through strategic planning and efficient execution, K&H Construction successfully completed the utility connection without cutting into the asphalt or shutting down the road. The trenchless approach minimized disruption to the surrounding area while eliminating the need for extensive pavement restoration once the work was complete. The completed installation provided CSC at the Lantern with the water supply necessary to support its code-compliant sprinkler system, helping move the renovation project one step closer to welcoming guests into its new space. The project highlights K&H Construction's commitment to finding innovative solutions that address complex site conditions while protecting existing infrastructure and reducing impacts on the community. By combining technical expertise with a proactive approach to problem-solving, K&H delivered a safe, efficient, and cost-effective outcome for everyone involved.
