The Project: AEP Shelter Replacement Project
The challenge & K&H's Role: K&H was part of a multi-year shelter replacement project for American Electric Power that spanned numerous jobsites in several locations. Each site had its own unique nuances and challenges. Specifically, at the Lancaster site:
- K&H set up a temporary shelter so no communication was lost during the replacement.
- K&H was charged with setting a 70K lb shelter with a 300K lb crane on a road that wasn’t even wide enough for the crane.
- Power had to be cut during the shelter set, as there were numerous power lines that the crane was adjacent to during the shelter set. But, the power being out had to be perfectly coordinated to not hinder business for the local restaurant owner.
- The set had to be planned for a lower traffic time, because road closures were a part of the execution and safety plan.
The result: K&H successfully coordinated and managed a detailed shelter set and rigging plan – managing subcontractors, customers, local business owners, and the general public. K&H’s involvement in the project ensured it was completed safely, on time, and with minimal disruption to the community. K&H also earned the trust and respect of the customer who commented:
The recent building off-load at Lancaster Tower Site was a very impressive off-load: height to clear communications lines, 270-ton crane, counterweights, etc. Kudos on the execution of this building off-load, especially the level of planning (Lift plan, distribution outage, restaurant coordination, tight space with existing towers, buildings) that went into this! Please pass my Kudos to all involved – job well done!
